Origin:
Huke is a private washing station located in the Gedeb woreda (administrative district) in the Gedeo Zone of Ethiopia. Situated in the Banko Gotiti kebele (local village), it is one of 26 washing stations owned and operated by Testi Coffee, a family-run company founded by Mr. Faysel A. Yonisa.
Located at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level, Huke produces exceptional lots of washed, natural, and special process coffees. Built by Testi in 2021 as a premium facility, the station was strategically chosen for its natural advantages, including high altitude, favorable regional characteristics, and access to fresh, clean water. By selecting locations in areas with ideal growing conditions and offering premiums for properly harvested cherries, Testi ensures that only the highest quality coffee is processed, resulting in exceptional complexity and distinctiveness in the final cup.
Most of the families contributing to this lot farm organically on small plots of land, averaging less than one hectare. Coffee is their primary cash crop, cultivated alongside food crops such as corn, grains, and bananas, under the shade of native Birbira, Wanza, and Acacia trees. The high altitude of these farms—ranging from 2000 to 2200 meters above sea level—combined with the region's cool temperatures allows for the slow maturation of the cherries. This results in denser beans and a sweeter, more complex flavor profile. Most farmers live 5-7 kilometers from the Huke washing station, and their coffee grows in ideal conditions, contributing to the exceptional quality of this lot.
This coffee is part of Testi's Premium Cherry Selection (PCS) initiative, which aims to improve quality through best practices in cultivation, harvesting, and processing. Launched in 2018, the PCS program ensures that farmers select and deliver only the ripest cherries. Coffees produced under this program represent the highest quality and purest cup profile available both at the washing station and throughout the entire region.
